Choosing the Right Doors for Your Home

Whether you are tempted by period doors, such as Victorian doors, 1930s doors or ledged and braced doors, the same considerations apply.
Base your decision on the wood you want the doors to be made of,engineered or pitch pine, glazed or solid, traditional or with fire protection, . Another thought is that, in the UK, if you make changes to a listed building, planning permission is often needed, and you will need to contact your local planning department. You may need to confine your choice to period doors.

One tip is that if you have Georgian or Victorian doors and want to change these period doors to create a more modern look, itís worth hanging on to the original period doors and storing them well, just in case you change your mind and want to revert to the original style. You can also then offer potential buyers the chance to install the original doors if and when you move.

You will also need to be sure that whatever you install meets all building and fire regulations. If you are choosing doors with glass in them such as the victorian doors or the 1930s doors, it should meet BS6206, the standard for toughened glass in the UK.

When choosing doors like ledge and brace doors their are two basic options. Hand made solid doors with solid timber boards or engineered. The latter are constructed with a solid timber core overlaid with oak veneers. These doors have the advantage of being very stable and less likely to twist or split.

Ledge and Brace Doors: The Basics

Ledge and brace doors are made from upright planks which are kept in place by both diagonal and horizontal planks ñ the ledges and braces which give these doors their name. These form the distinctive ìZî shape which is a characteristic of ledged and braced doors. But these are only visible from the inside of the door ñ from the outside all you see are the oak boards and their clean vertical lines.

Ledged and braced doors should not be confused with braced doors which just have three or four horizontal planks of wood over the front of the door.

The great thing about ledged and braced doors is that they are very robust, made with 20mm solid oak tongue and grooved boards simlar doors have lasted for hundreds of years in country cottages.

These doors give a property a lot of character, and so are particularly suitable for barns, cottages, country homes and conversions. You can also personalise your ledge and brace doors by choosing, say, a clear matt finish or going for an oak stain of your choice, from light or medium to dark.
If you go for solid oak ledged and braced doors, you should have a minimum of three ledges for extra strength.

Choosing Victorian Doors

When replacing victorian doors decide on the final look you are trying to achieve. The pitch pine door is the closest in colour and look to original pine doors that have been stripped. If you are painting the doors or want a lighter coloured wood go for the clear pine or the painted shaker doors. We also supply an oak version which fits in perfectly with modern oak flooring. Some simple victorian houses or
Less important rooms in large Victorian houses had doors with no panel moulding if you require this style of door have a look at the oak shaker door or the pre primed shaker door under the clear pine door heading.

What Were Genuine 1930s Doors Like?

In the 1930s doors were often softwood and designed to be painted. The proportions where different from Victorian doors with a high mid rail and one or three panels in the top over three panels in the bottom. The doors were sometimes glazed with coloured glass in geometric shapes, frequently in chevron or sun ray patterns. Hollywood style, including chrome, tended to affect the fashion as far as door ìfurnitureî was concerned. Today, 1930s doors are still a popular choice for many homeowners.
